Foiling, embossing, tactile varnishes, holograms or any other value-adding finishing process increase product appeal, and in turn, the likelihood of the customer picking up the product in the shop. Particularly in the very competitive high end of the market, in luxury packaging, we are seeing many innovative processes being introduced.

Adding foil in the traditional way, using either cold or hot foil methods on a finishing line, can be very costly. Recently, new systems have been developed that use a digitally printed image or pattern as the basis for lamination of foils for embellishment.

Vivid Laminating Technologies first launched the Matrix brand of laminators some 18 years ago, but it was not until very recently when the company further developed the machines by incorporating a pneumatic controller that the Matrix became known for the added value it can bring to packaging in the form of foiling and spot UV-style varnishes. With pneumatics come the ability to vary the pressure of the roller, essential as foiling needs less pressure than lamination.
