The Edge 850
Whether looking for an entry level label printing system or a production level machine, iSys has the answers to the needs of printing companies that see digital label printing as a viable business direction.
The Canadian company, based in Calgary, offers two toner based label machines – the short to mid run length APEX 1290 and the more compact, desktop EDGE 850, both of which will be exhibited at Labelexpo Europe in Brussels, Belgium, in September, on stand 12U108.
These digital label print solutions are suitable for all sorts of applications, whether it be custom water bottle labels or stickers for a special event, and they boast innovative features such as quick changeover technology, coupled with full workflow software which allows operations to stage and print jobs in minutes rather than hours.
The entry level EDGE 850 can print at speeds up to 9.14 metres per minute (up to 2000 labels in less than 20 minutes) for short run label production on a variety of die-cut, kiss-cut or roll substrates.
Jobs can be initiated by choosing from conventional or die-cut media in a variety of substrates from the iSys Certified Media Library.
Maximum print width is 209 mm (8.24 inches), minimum 152 mm (6 inches) and print quality is 1200 x 600 dpi. The APEX 1290 has identical speed and quality performance to the EDGE 850, but has greater media flexibility at both ends of the spectrum, with a maximum print width of 320 mm (12.6 inches) and a minimum of 76 mm (3 inches). Again, jobs can be initiated by choosing from conventional or die-cut media from the iSys Certified Media Library. The system comes equipped with a 305 mm on demand rewinder that is adjustable to match the continuous media output.
Additionally, the APEX 1290 also has larger capacity toner cartridges and media spools, and can cut on the fly. Its productivity is considerably greater than the EDGE 850, being able to print 28,000 labels in 37 minutes.

In addition to the hardware, iSys Label will be showing its full featured, easy-to-use label software at Labelexpo. EDGE2Print and APEX2Print are Harlequin RIP software packages that were developed exclusively for the company’s digital label printers, providing full colour management tools and a built-in Pantone Library.

While these software packages come as standard with the APEX 1290 and EDGE 850, iSys Label also provides optional variable data software, compatible with both APEX2Print and EDGE2Print, allowing for mass customisation. This package, called iVDP, will be shown at Labelexpo. It gives the user the ability to combine static and dynamic content to create varying multi-graphic labels containing variable text, images and barcodes. iVDP layouts can be easily set up and configured to run variable portions in both horizontal and vertical dataset formats, enabling the user to quickly create highly-targeted, professional digital label designs.
Variable data software features include:
• Pre-adjust colour registration app and memory management system
• Rotate images and objects using alignment tools
• Basic formatting tools such as auto-size, scaling, tab stops and paragraph spacing
• Import numerous graphic formats including BMP, DCX, DIB, DXF, EPS, GIF, IMG, JPG, PCX, PNG, TGA, TIF, WMF, WPG, PDF
• Over 400 pre-formatted, ready-to-use barcode components including QR codes, UPC, Codabar, Code 39s, 93s, and 128s, advanced serialisation
