Technical editor Sean Smyth remembers the late Memjet CEO Len Lauer, who passed away unexpectedly on 12 April, 2020
Shocking news to hear about Len, who built Memjet into a powerful and important player in the inkjet space.
Memjet’s technology steadily improved, with the pigmented ink systems opening up new label and packaging applications as evidenced by the systems on show at Labelexpo Europe 2019, which were due to be joined by many more when drupa had arrived/arrives. The strong IP together with the team that Len was responsible for will stand Memjet well in their next phase of development.
Len was a charming, passionate leader. I enjoyed discussing industry developments with him as he had interesting insights into the fast-moving inkjet world. As well as that he was one of the few industry CEOs I met who had a picture of himself backstage with the Rolling Stones! That was also a fascinating conversation.
The industry will miss Len, but will profit from his legacy.
Sean- as usual, you nailed it. That was beautifully perfect. I hope you don’t mind, I’ve shared that around 🙂 Thank you for the kind words!
A beautiful tribute, Sean. I love that your mention of the Rolling Stones!
Thanks, Marion – we had a very interesting conversation about what Keith Richards had in his hair when Len met him! It told me a lot about Len, much more than a discussion about inkjet technology did.
