Section of the new large format HP Scitex 15000

At interpack 2014, HP announced new additions to its Graphics Solutions portfolio, which sees the company expand further into the corrugated, flexible packaging and folding carton markets.

To help packaging converters and manufacturers take advantage of the digital opportunity in these sectors, the company introduced the HP Scitex 15000 corrugated press for production of corrugated displays and short run packaging.

Expected to be available on 1 November, the Scitex 15000 features High Dynamic Range (HDR) printing technology, easy set up and operation as well as speeds up to 600 sqm/hr. An integrated automatic media loader handles up to four media stacks side by side and is optimised for use with corrugated sheets without operator intervention.

HP also intends to enter the growing packaging segment with its inkjet web press solutions. Based on its Scalable Thermal Inkjet Technology used successfully in other segments, including publishing, production mail and commercial print, HP will introduce new inkjet solutions configured for packaging that will help converters produce cost-effective short to medium runs and digital customisation, deliver faster turnaround times and reduce inventory at production speeds of up to 12,000 sqm/hr. The company said that it is working with leading packaging converters to validate the technology in terms of quality, flexibility and economics.

Other news included a strategic agreement with Comexi Group to develop a lamination solution optimised for the Indigo 20000. The Comexi Nexus L20000 is the first dedicated end-to-end lamination and coating solution for digitally printed flexible packaging. Available in inline or offline configurations, it will offer advanced solvent-free lamination to help flexible packaging converters shorten time-to-market, as well as help reduce waste and environmental impact.

Comexi Group will showcase the laminator later this year. Availability is expected in early 2015.
