Ricoh’s Pro Print toners have been found to comply with EU and FDA legislation for food packaging when used with a functional barrier. The endorsement by Smithers Pira widens the application possibilities that customers can deliver using Ricoh’s colour sheetfed presses.
After completing the testing process by Smithers Pira, the toners were awarded a certificate of conformity assuring EU food packaging legislation compliance for food packaging intended for all food types when used behind a functional barrier. This applies to the Ricoh Pro C9200, Ricoh Pro C9100, Ricoh Pro C7200 and Ricoh Pro C7100 series of presses, both four and five colour models.
‘This certification will give PSPs, and their clients, peace of mind when using the Pro C9200, Pro C9100, Pro C7200 and Pro C7100 colour sheetfed presses for food related packaging applications,’ said Eef De Ridder, vice president of commercial printing, commercial and industrial printing group, Ricoh Europe. ‘It supports our continuous drive to ensure PSPs are always in the best position possible to move into new sectors or embrace growing markets.’
Smithers Pira completed the migration testing and set-off tests on 30 micron polypropylene film that were applied with self-adhesive labels printed using Ricoh’s toner technology, and reported that no significant migration or set-off was observed into tenax, 95% ethanol or isooctane food simulants under the test conditions. A risk assessment was carried out for non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) associated with the toners and found to be in compliance.
