Germany-based Thimm Group has installed a Highcon Beam 2C for digital laser cutting of corrugated substrates.
Thimm produces corrugated cardboard transportation and sales packaging, high-quality promotional displays, packaging systems combining a range of materials, and print products for further industrial processing. The company’s product offerings are further enhanced by a wide range of associated packaging services covering the entire supply chain. Its customers include prestigious branded product groups from across all sectors. Founded in 1949, the family-owned business has currently operates 22 sites in Germany, Czech Republic, Romania, Poland, France and Mexico. The Highcon Beam 2C has been commissioned at the production plant in Všetaty, Czech Republic. It further enhances the Czech plant of Thimm’s pack’n’display business, which was already operating at a very high level of automation and digitalisation with state-of-the-art digital high-end laser technology in Europe.
Originally debuting in 2016, Beam was introduced by Highcon as a high throughput digital laser cutting and creasing system to complement its Euclid series. The new, updated Highcon Beam 2C laser cutting machine now supports the digital production process from design and data preparation through to the finishing of corrugated cardboard. The laser cuts and engraves the corrugated cardboard with absolute precision, Highcon stated. Creases are created using the company’s patented digital adhesive rule technology (DART) system.
Thimm noted that its new Highcon Beam 2C is unique in Europe as regards to its design, and opens up unusually creative opportunities for packaging designers. Lasers can cut delicate designs out of corrugated cardboard which previously could only be produced with difficulty, or not at all, the company identified.
Michael Weber, head of corporate marketing at Thimm, commented, ‘Our objective is always to deliver the best solution to the customer. Alongside digital printing, this digital laser cutting technology for the digital finishing of corrugated cardboard represents a logical expansion of our capacities. We are convinced that laser-cut packaging and displays are relevant to many different sectors and we are currently working closely with our customers in the preparation of new packaging and presentation options in order to generate a competitive advantage for them.’
Beam 2C is to be part of Highcon’s presence at drupa 2020, alongside a host of other new technologies and enhancements.
